Unique Professionals Program

PTC UP is an innovative inclusive postsecondary education program created to provide persons with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience career training. Upon successful completion, students will obtain a certificate from PTC UP in their chosen field of study.

Students in PTC UP express a strong desire to acquire a career skill in an inclusive setting, engage in work-based learning opportunities and to learn self-determination skills. The program is located on the St. Petersburg campus of Pinellas Technical College.

Who Can Apply


Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the PTC UP program.

Age and Education

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of acceptance

Disability Documentation

  • Have a documented intellectual disability
  • Provide recent documentation, from an IEP or a licensed psychiatrist, showing the diagnosis and evaluation results

Behavior and Attendance

  • Have a clean disciplinary and incident record
  • Show a strong attendance record from high school or previous employment

Skills and Independence

  • Demonstrate basic literacy, reading and math skills
  • Be able to function independently for sustained periods
  • Maintain personal hygiene and self-care without assistance
  • Show appropriate social maturity for an adult educational and work environment

Support and Transportation

  • Have reliable transportation, personal or public
  • Have a committed support system

Commitment

  • Show a genuine interest in attending the program and a willingness to follow rules
  • Agree to follow the PTC Student Handbook and the PTC UP supplemental rules

Program Fit

  • Be capable of meeting personal goals within the program's setting and content
  • Demonstrate interest and alignment with a career and technical education program, for example through a portfolio or teacher references

Documents considered in the eligibility decision:

  • IEPs, TIEPs and K-12 educational records
  • Vocational Rehabilitation records, such as psychological or vocational aptitude reports and an IPE
  • Medical documentation of the disability. Self-disclosure is required.
